Our story
How a frustrating shower started Hydrova.
An origin story inspired by student life, shared apartments, and the small problems people learn to solve together.
Waterloo, Ontario
Five friends, one apartment, and water that never felt quite right.
The story behind Hydrova · Hydrova team
Hydrova began when a group of university friends in Waterloo grew frustrated with the water in their shower. No matter which shampoo they bought or how often they cleaned the bathroom, the showerhead collected residue and every shower felt less refreshing than it should have.
The problem followed them home
At first, they assumed it was only their rental. Then they went home for reading week and compared notes. The same complaints came up in different houses and apartments: mineral residue around fixtures, showerheads that were difficult to clean, and shelves crowded with products that promised too much while explaining very little.
A better place to start
The friends started researching shower filters, replacement cartridges, and simple accessories. They found plenty of options, but the information was often buried under technical language and dramatic claims. What they wanted was straightforward: a small collection where every item had a clear job and customers could understand what they were buying in a few minutes.
Building Hydrova between classes
They divided the work around lectures, part-time jobs, and late evenings at the library. One person compared product designs, another organized the catalogue, and the rest focused on photography, writing, and the online store. Their first collection came together around a filtered showerhead, the cartridge that keeps it working, and three useful accessories for washing, storage, and drying hair.
Keeping the idea simple
Hydrova was never meant to overwhelm people with hundreds of nearly identical choices. The team wanted each product to solve a specific everyday problem and each description to say exactly what the product does. That meant avoiding miracle language, keeping the selection focused, and making replacement parts easy to find.
From one shared shower to a shared idea
What started as a complaint in a Waterloo apartment became a platform built around clearer choices for the shower. The friends still disagree about who first suggested turning the idea into a store, but they agree on the reason they kept going: a routine people use every day should be easy to understand and simple to improve.
